Moving from another platform or a spreadsheet? Import your subscribers into a list with the CSV import wizard. Imports map your columns to MailingPlatform fields, create custom fields where needed, and show progress while large files are processed.
Before you import
- Export only people who opted in. Never import purchased or scraped lists - they destroy deliverability and violate the terms of service.
- Clean your export. Remove unsubscribed, bounced and complained contacts from the file if your old platform includes them, or keep their status column so the import can preserve it.
- One list per audience. Create the list first (Lists in the dashboard), then import into it.
Run the import
- Open the list and choose to add subscribers, then pick CSV import
- Upload your CSV file (comma or semicolon separated, with a header row)
- Map columns: match each CSV column to a field - email is required; first name, last name, phone, birthday, gender and status are built in
- Columns that do not match a built-in field can be imported as custom fields, which become available as merge tags (for example a
citycolumn becomes{{city}}) - Review the preview and start the import
Progress is shown under "Active imports" on the subscriber page, and large imports continue in the background.
Statuses on import
Each subscriber row has a status: active, inactive, unsubscribed, blacklisted or complained. If your file contains a status column, map it so unsubscribes from your old platform stay unsubscribed here. Imported subscribers do not receive a confirmation email - double opt-in applies to new signups through forms and the API, not to imports.
After the import
- Spot-check a few subscribers to confirm fields mapped correctly
- Build segments on any field you imported (Segments in the dashboard)
- If you migrated from another tool, the switch guides cover the rest: Klaviyo, Mailchimp and others
Exporting
You can export subscribers back out as CSV at any time, choosing which fields to include. Your data is never locked in.
